Hopton Hall’s Snowdrop Walk
As winter slowly makes way for Spring, the Derbyshire countryside offers a serene escape into nature's early blooms: the snowdrop. Last weekend, I took a trip to Hopton Hall's renowned Snowdrop Walk. Followed by a hearty Sunday roast at The Old Gate Inn in Brassington, it makes for a quintessentially British day out.
Close to Ashbourne, with views overlooking Carsington Water, the historic Hopton Hall opens its gardens every February, inviting visitors to meander through a carpet of delicate snowdrops. With a variety of early bloomers, each with their own unique charm, visitors are encouraged to follow the carefully signposted route and discover single-petalled and double-blossomed varieties of snowdrops, all blanketing the landscape in a gorgeous sea of white.
It’s a great opportunity to take in the wildlife too - I was lucky enough to spot a tiny Goldcrest - the UK’s smallest bird - who was foraging for food a mere metre away from me.
The walk takes approximately 45 minutes, and there are refreshments available from the food trailer - so you can stop for a coffee, cup of soup or slice of cake and soak up the late winter atmosphere.
The gardens are open daily from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with the last admittance at 3:00 PM. Admission is £5 for adults and £2.50 for children aged 6 to 16, while those under 6 enjoy free entry.
A Hearty Feast at The Old Gate Inn
Following your walk, a short drive will bring you to the charming village of Brassington, where The Old Gate Inn awaits. Dating back to 1616, this Grade II* listed pub exudes historical charm, with original fire ranges and oak-panelled rooms, and is also part of the Hopton Hall estate, along with several other pubs in the local area.
On Sundays, the inn serves a traditional roast, with diners enjoying excellent quality food accompanied by all the trimmings. The cosy atmosphere, complete with roaring fires, provides the perfect setting to relax and indulge after your countryside exploration. Given its popularity, especially on weekends, I recommend that you book a table in advance to secure a spot.
